Recent Harvard study proven, that “prolonged TV viewing was associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and premature death.”
According statistics, Australians spend about 50% of their daily free time in front of the TV which is 3 hours a day. This cuts your time from exercise, planning your meals, cooking healthy and mainly fills your mind with low priority things.
Jim Rohn said once to a gentleman that told him about his new TV he had about a year. Mr. Rohn said that TV didn’t cost him $2000 but it cost him his time, education and health which sums up to dozens of thousands of dollars. I believe there is a profound truth when you look at it from a different perspective. You can always get more money but you’ll never get your time back. And there is no difference between us as everybody has 24 hours in a day. It is up to you what you do with it.
That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t watch TV at all. No, just choose a program that is important to you and you get a value out of it. Read instead – it’ll stimulate your brain as you have to use your imagination, expands your vocabulary and you will most probably learn some new skills as well.
I have seen a movie recently called Gifted hands – The Ben Carson story; a true story which shows his life. I got very inspired when his mother, illiterate housekeeper, was cleaning a huge mansion of a very rich gentleman. She noticed that he had books everywhere, even in front of a TV which was dusty and obviously unused. She came home that night, turned off the TV to her sons and told them to choose two programs in a week and the rest of the time use for reading. Until that point very average boys got within a year onto top of their class!
TV is a great tool and can help in many ways but it’s called a TV program for a reason – it programs us. Make sure you have time for other things as well such us exercise, reading, meditating or whatever you like to do.
Do you have a TV at home? How much time do you spend watching it in a week? Share in the comments below.
