Watching TV has a big impact on your health

Watching TV

Recent Harvard study proven, that “prolonged TV viewing was associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and premature death.”

According statistics, Australians spend about 50% of their daily free time in front of the TV which is 3 hours a day. This cuts your time from exercise, planning your meals, cooking healthy and mainly fills your mind with low priority things.

Jim Rohn said once to a gentleman that told him about his new TV he had about a year. Mr. Rohn said that TV didn’t cost him $2000 but it cost him his time, education and health which sums up to dozens of thousands of dollars. I believe there is a profound truth when you look at it from a different perspective. You can always get more money but you’ll never get your time back. And there is no difference between us as everybody has 24 hours in a day. It is up to you what you do with it.

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t watch TV at all. No, just choose a program that is important to you and you get a value out of it. Read instead – it’ll stimulate your brain as you have to use your imagination, expands your vocabulary and you will most probably learn some new skills as well.

I have seen a movie recently called Gifted hands – The Ben Carson story; a true story which shows his life. I got very inspired when his mother, illiterate housekeeper, was cleaning a huge mansion of a very rich gentleman. She noticed that he had books everywhere, even in front of a TV which was dusty and obviously unused. She came home that night, turned off the TV to her sons and told them to choose two programs in a week and the rest of the time use for reading. Until that point very average boys got within a year onto top of their class!

TV is a great tool and can help in many ways but it’s called a TV program for a reason – it programs us. Make sure you have time for other things as well such us exercise, reading, meditating or whatever you like to do.

Do you have a TV at home? How much time do you spend watching it in a week? Share in the comments below.

The Beautiful Truth

A movie about Gerson therapy that was recommended to me by a friend. Movie is about a boy who is asking questions and searching for the answers regarding cancer. He travels in pursuit of an alternative treatments, asking scientists, doctors, researchers and patients about alternative treatments.
This movie is really inspiring not only because it provides insight into the cancer problematic but also the power of knowledge, now easily accessible with the internet.

Sit back and enjoy this free movie.

Placebo effect

Everyone knows what placebo is but did you know about the power it really holds? Watch the following short clip to learn more about the power of our mind. I think it’s not ‘frekin weird’ as mentioned in the video but ‘pretty freakin awesome’ that our mind holds such capability – which can be utilized.

Toddler saved by marijuana

Medical marijuana, legal in some US states, can be a real lifesaver and not only for adults. Watch this story about dad who did what he felt was right and saved his son’s life.

EMF and health

Presentation by Camilla Rees not only about her personal experience with EMF (Electromagnetic Fields) but mainly about science and credible evidence of EMF and its long term, chronic effect on us.

In another video presentation from Martin Blank, PhD who looked into a research and found that cells defense system is being activated in the same fashion when exposed to radiation as when exposed to environmental toxins.

Camilla Rees talks about connection between EMF and (watch at 3:50):

  • autism
  • cancer
  • behavioural changes
  • calcium efflux
  • diabetes
  • brain tumors
  • sleeping disorders
  • hormone disturbance
  • fertility
  • autoimmune diseases
  • impaired learning

Evidence shown that

“For every 100 hours of cell phone use, the risk of brain cancer increases by 5%. For every year of cell phone use the risk of brain cancer increases by 8%. After 10 or more years of digital cell phone use there was a 280% increase in risk of brain cancer.”
Lennart Hardell, MD, PhD

The most affected are children and teenagers as their brains and immune systems are still developing so their risk of developing brain cancer is even higher. EMF and health related problems had been noticed in Taiwan and Korea where they banned cell towers and wireless technology in schools. EU is reviewing the studies and might change their legislation as well.

Cell tower

Cell tower

If you are living in the modern world, radiation is everywhere and you can not escape it. The good news is that you can reduce the exposure by following some simple guidelines (video at 23:00)

  • limit your wireless exposure (use cable connection whenever possible)
  • use wired phone at home instead of mobile
  • when using mobile, use hands free to limit the exposure to your brain
  • if using your mobile as alarm clock, turn it off (if you can’t, use flight mode instead)
  • remove hotspots in your head – amalgan fillings that serves as antennas
  • consider moving if you are living very close to the cell tower

Recently Apple released upgrade for iOS to 4.3 where they introduced HotSpot function so you can connect wirelessly and use your iPhone’s internet access. I wanted to test it so while my phone was charging behind me, I connected and worked with my laptop in front of me. Within 5 minutes I got very strong headache so I decided to end the experiment. My headache was gone within 10 minutes. If you don’t have any other choice, make sure you don’t stand in a way of the signal to minimize the exposure to your body.

Sugar – The Bitter Truth

Digestion of sugar in our body is not as simple as we may think and not every sugar is the same. In following presentation MD Robert H. Lustig talks about sugar, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and ethanol (alcohol) and their differences in our digestion.

If you’re eating 187 or 335kcal more today than you were 20 years ago, your leptin isn’t working. Because if it were, you wouldn’t be doing it.”

MD Lustig is taking the science and compares it with past experience and collected data and dissolves the mystery around food, fat, obesity and overconsumption. Did you know that we eat more because our bodies lost the ability to produce hormone leptin that sends a signal to the brain that we had enough and should stop eating? Why is that?

The answer lies in our sugar consumption, mainly HFCS that was invented in Japan in 1966 and sold to US. HFCS is sweeter than sugar and cheaper to produce so you can find it almost everywhere:

  • soda
  • bread
  • sauces
  • salads
  • processed foods
  • the list goes on

Next time check the ingredients and I guarantee you’ll have hard time to find food without it.

Why is it everywhere?

Because you’re losing your sense of being full, it makes you eat more. Get a meal combo with soda which will you will sip while you eating and your leptin production is impaired – you will overeat.

How is glucose (sugar) digested?

If you take 120kcal of sugar, 96kcal or 80% is digested by any organs in the body as glucose is the cell fuel. The rest 24kcal is digested in the liver and stored as a glycogen. Because it is not toxic, your liver can store enormous amounts of it without any harm. Watch at 44:55 for more details.

How is fructose/sucrose digested?

Let’s take the same amount – 120kcal. Because half of it is glucose, it will be digested as described earlier. The rest, 60kcal of fructose is digested only in a liver because only liver can metabolize it. Because fructose doesn’t stimulate creation of insulin, there isn’t control in place in our body. Waste product of the process is uric acid which is a cause of gout and hypertension. For more details, watch at 56:25.

How is ethanol/alcohol digested?

Take the same amount – 120kcal again. 24kcal is processed by stomach & intestine (10%), kidney, muscle and brain consume the other 10%. 96kcal will reach the liver where it gets converted to acidaldehyde (sounds like formaldehyde? Yes, it’s in the same, “dangerous family”) which cross-link protein and can cause many health issues including cancer. If this happens regularly, you can develop cirrhosis. Watch the video at 53:05 for more information.

The result is that the ethanol produces the same result in the body as fructose so why it isn’t controlled by FDA or USDA? The problem is volume. With alcohol 96kcal enters the liver, with HFCS only 60kcal which makes it a chronic problem, not acute and by definition can’t be controlled. To sum up, fructose has the same effect on your body as alcohol without the buzz.

I would like to remind you that you can find fructose in the fruits but it is bond there with fibre and thus doesn’t have the same effect as isolated fructose that it being misleadingly called natural. You will not find it in it’s pure state in the nature.

Will you give up soda or HFCS? Please share your thoughts in comments.

Healthy fast food – reality or oxymoron?

“New York Times food columnist Mark Bittman recently examined the nutritional merits of McDonald’s Fruit & Maple Oatmeal, an apparently “healthy” breakfast item that actually contains more sugar than a Snickers bar and only 10 fewer calories than an Egg McMuffin.”

I hold an opinion that if something has too many ingredients and you can’t even pronounce them, stay away from it. Just check out next time bread in your supermarket – how there can be 25 – 30 ingredients if bread is flour, water, salt, perhaps yeast, salt and some herbs? If that amount of artificial additives is in bread, what about processed food or fast food?

If we are talking about healthy food, this just doesn’t get through that filter with the amount of sugar and chemicals.

Do you want to know what’s in your cereals?

I came accross this video and found it very disturbing – what they put in our daily food. Watch and judge for yourself.

This probably goes to all processed and frozen meals so stay away from it, it’s not worth it.

MSG and health

MSG [E621] or monosodium glutamate is a sodium salt of glutamic acid, a non-essential amino acid. It was patented in 1909 in Japan as flavour enhancer and used as food additive ever since.

MSG

MSG is one of the worst food additives on the market used in canned soups, processed food, meats, crackers and much more. It is also known as “Chinese restaurant syndrome” as many people got sick after eating in Chinese restaurants. Even though MSG brings out the flavour and your food tastes better it can have deadly consequences. From the book Excitotoxins: The taste that kills:

Eating healthy – what change can you expect?

In Appleton High School they’ve tried an experiment – remove all vending machines and junk food from the cafeteria and replace it with watercoolers and wholesome, fresh food. The amazing change it had on students, their bahaviour and attention in class is profound. The cost of food is obviously higher ($20.000 annually) but as Dr. Barbara Reed Stitt, Natural Ovens President, said: “One child arrested would cost the schools more.”

Watch the video and see for yourself the selfevidence of healthy diet.
